The Abbey of Berne is not located in Berne. In 1134, Norbertines established a monastic community in the hamlet of Bern by the Maas River. The brothers cultivated land, settled in villages such as Berlicum and Heeswijk, and provided pastoral care in the wider area. During the Reformation, the abbey by the Maas was destroyed, and the monks had to go into hiding in their parishes. The brotherhood was fragmented for a long time. Around 1857, communal life was restored after war and plundering in the old Slotje in Heeswijk, which was presumably a hunting lodge of the Duke of Brabant.
