Description

De Abdij van Berne ligt niet in Berne. In 1134 stichtten norbertijnen een kloostergemeenschap in de buurtschap Bern aan de Maas. De broeders ontgonnen land, vestigden zich in dorpen als Berlicum en Heeswijk en verzorgden het pastoraat in de wijde omgeving. Tijdens de Reformatie werd de abdij aan de Maas verwoest en moesten de kloosterlingen onderduiken in hun parochies. De broedergemeenschap raakte lange tijd versnipperd. Omstreeks 1857 werd het gemeenschapsleven na oorlog en plundering hersteld in het oude Slotje in Heeswijk, dat vermoedelijk een jachtslot van de hertog van Brabant was.
