17 The Grid

A striking place in Kockengen is the gateway to the church square: De Rooster. This name refers to the game grid that used to be in the way through the entrance gate. According to tradition, this was to prevent the devil from taking the souls of the deceased from the cemetery near the church with his goat's feet. It seems more likely that it was to keep the pigs, which used to roam freely on the streets, out of the cemetery. They could stir up unwanted residue while rooting.

For more than 150 years, there has been a bakery next to the gate with the same name: De Rooster.

In the photo we see the entrance to the church through the gate and the church tower that is in scaffolding. This makes it possible to date the photo to 1955-'58, when the church was restored over several years. Nine beautiful stained glass windows were installed at that time.

The entrance portal of the church is visible through the gate, surmounted by a sandstone plaque with the year 1635 and the coat of arms of Johan van Zuylen van de Haar, lord of Kockengen. Next to the entrance you will find an information board of the H.K. Breukelen and the ANWB.

Route: Walk under the gate to the right through the church until you reach the Heicop.
