Reformed Church Urmond

This church has its own cemetery. The visitor will notice that only a few family names of the mainly Protestant deceased appear on the tombstones. At a Protestant funeral service, there are not specifically church rituals as with Catholics. The pastor discusses the life of the deceased, often mentioning the name of the deceased. The name is also central to the next of kin and often have them in mind. We talk about the highs and lows with Bible verses that offer support. The lyrics are often chosen by the family. They also choose to light a candle during the service and which flowers are laid. The preacher says a final prayer at the grave or crematorium when the body becomes one with the earth. What is special to mention is that at funerals in the Protestant church, the body is often first buried (closing off the old) and then the service takes place (celebrating the new heavenly/spiritual life of the deceased).
