The lady of Simpelveld

With the Archeo Route Limburg you will discover the stories behind Limburg's history and archaeology. The most important places of this route are marked with a work of art in the shape of a spear.
By chance, three sandstone sarcophagi were found in Simpelveld on 11 December 1930. The finders never expected to have found one of the archaeological masterpieces of the Netherlands.
When opened, two of the three crates were found to have been looted. Only the third coffin was still intact; it belonged to a lady who breathed her last in the second century AD.
Her body rested in a sarcophagus decorated with reliefs on the inside, and she was surrounded by precious ornaments such as a glass bottle, a silver mirror and a stylus.
