Just outside Maastricht, near the border with Belgium, is one of the most beautiful carved limestone quarries in the world, the Jesuit Mountain.
The mining of this quarry, which is part of the Fallenberg quarry in the Cannerberg, took place in the period 1704 and 1880, when the marl was used as a building block.
The fact that there is now a subterranean museum in the corridors is thanks to the Jesuit fathers from Maastricht. Between 1860 and 1960, scholastics and theologians of the Jesuit Order went into the quarry on their free Wednesday for relaxation.
They made drawings, paintings, sculptures and sculptures, which resulted in a unique collection of works of art.
