In 1885 the Amsterdam banker Hendrik Maurits Jacobus van Loon bought the Hydepark estate. He almost immediately had an orangery built to protect his exclusive southern European potted plants and trees from the Dutch climate. The building was inaugurated in 1888.
With its high arched windows, pilasters, frames, balustrades, domes and rich decorations, the national monument is reminiscent of, for example, the French palaces of Versailles. That's no coincidence. Architect Jean Nicolas Landré was inspired by the eclectic architectural style of the French sun king Louis XIV.
In front of the Orangery is an ornate style garden with a pond and fountain. The wide hedge arch in the extension of the pond used to form the line of sight to Landhuis Hydepark, which with its palatial appearance and luxurious amenities was far ahead of its time. Unfortunately, the mansion was completely destroyed during the Second World War. The Orangery escaped that fate.
