Just like the nearby Schip, the Zaanhof is another admirable example of public housing in the Spaarndammerbuurt. It was built in 1919. The gates, turrets and dormers are already waving at us, the falcons are on guard. My house is my castle, the architect Herman Walenkamp must have thought, a sheltered environment for the residents.
The courtyard has a double shell: two edges with houses surround the public courtyard. Memorial stones have been built above the gates. If you walk up to them you can read them. There is a huge motivation to build a special home for ordinary people. Does such a social aspiration still exist today?
The park, on the other hand, makes an anonymous impression. High time for a vegetable garden association.
