The town hall of Terneuzen was completed in 1972 to a design by Jaap Bakema, in the style of brutalism and the principles of tectonics. The design is inspired by shipping and depicts the superstructure of a ship. The town hall is located on the dike along the Western Scheldt.
In the 1990s, a building was added to the town hall. This building allows the stowage of containers on board container shovel brake for the fore. This new building is located at a reasonable distance from the original building to do justice to both of them. Between the two buildings, a two-storey underground space with a patio has been created that connects both parts. The main entrance is now also located in this part.
