The Synagogue on the Lekstraat was completed in 1937, three years before the German occupation. The style of the new objectivity makes the building a bit of a fremdkörper between the Amsterdam School architecture of Plan Zuid. Typical for that style are the bands of windows in metal rebates and the minimal relief in the facades. The facades of the synagogue are clad with natural stone slabs. The design is by Abraham Elzas, who later in his career worked a lot for the Hema and the Bijenkorf. The building actually consists of two parts. We are standing here in front of the great synagogue. The façade reads, "And I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel, and I will not leave my people Israel." The text comes from the Torah. The building is now an auction house and restored with attention to the original furnishings. On the right is the community building with a classroom and a small synagogue. This part is still used that way.
