During a period of the Tertiary, 40 to 12 million years ago, South Limburg was flooded several times by the North Sea. The coastline shifted into the Ardennes.
In this sea, clay and sand were alternately deposited. When the sea retreated westwards about 12 million years ago, South Limburg was dissolved together with the Ardennes and became part of the catchment area of the East Meuse.
A prolonged period of erosion set in. The deposited clay and sand was largely demolished. Sealing of sand by means of quartz cement resulted in the formation of the Sandstone blocks present here.
