Island of Banholt

The Island of Banholt is a geological feature in Dutch South Limburg and is part of the Plateau of Margraten. It is a prominent elevated area in the hilly landscape, with its highest point near the village of Banholt. The elevation initially formed, together with the heights of Hallembaye in the southwest and Ubachsberg in the northeast, the northern valley wall of the East Meuse Valley. When the Meuse broke through the high valley wall and shifted its course westward, the elevation became an island that, as a result of the continuously deepening of the Meuse, protruded higher above the valley than other rivers. Thus, the elevation formed a separation between the valleys of the East Meuse and the West Meuse.
