L'île de Banholt est un objet géologique dans le sud du Limbourg néerlandais et fait partie du Plateau de Margraten. C'est une zone élevée marquée dans le paysage vallonné avec son point culminant dans les environs du village de Banholt. La hauteur formait d'abord, avec la hauteur de Hallembaye au sud-ouest et la hauteur d'Ubachsberg au nord-est, le versant nord de la vallée de l'Oostmaas. Lorsque la Meuse a percé le haut versant et a modifié son cours vers l'ouest, la hauteur est devenue une île qui, en raison de l'érosion croissante de la Meuse, a surélevé d'autres rivières au-dessus de la vallée. La hauteur forma ainsi une séparation entre les vallées de l'Oostmaas et de la Westmaas.
