The Airborne Monument, also known as De Naald, is a war memorial in the Dutch town of Oosterbeek dedicated to the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944. It is designated as a National Monument and has been designated as a municipal monument by the municipality of Renkum. In September 1944, Operation Market Garden took place, an Allied offensive aimed at the German occupiers. American, British, and Polish soldiers participated in the operation. At Oosterbeek, the 1st British Airborne Division engaged in the fight, tasked with capturing the Rhine Bridge in Arnhem. During the Battle of the Rhine Bridge, the British found themselves trapped due to counterattacks by the Germans and were forced to retreat to Oosterbeek after more than a week. Urquhart established his divisional headquarters at the Hartenstein Hotel. In April 1945, Arnhem was liberated.
