Around 1290 a castle was built by a certain Count Reinoud 1. The current castle is now the fourth castle. This was built in 1905 on the old foundations of the previous castle, which dates from the eighteenth century. The last castle was built in Art Nouveau style.
The castle has been a recreational resort and hotel / restaurant for many years, but now it is rented to private individuals.
The castle is also linked to white peacocks: for the helmet of the counts and dukes of Guelders, the castle was given the privilege of breeding white peacocks. The white peacocks are originally albinos. A white peacock statue has also been erected here for these critters. The peacock feathers are still presented annually to the Queen's Commissioner in Gelderland.
In the 14th century, the legend of Eleanor who languished and died after a love drama on Staverden took place here. A later romantic placed a stone in the forest behind the castle where she is said to have been buried with the inscription 'Leonora 1353'. It is said that her spirit still haunts as 'black woman of Staverden'.
