Staverden is located at the lowest point of the Valley of the Hierdense or Staverdense Stream. It is believed that the valley was filled with a meltwater lake at the end of the penultimate ice age. Sediments were deposited in this lake from the surrounding hills. The large variety of rocks found in the valley is unique. At that time, stones were brought here from Scandinavia, the Baltic region, northern Germany, and from the entire Rhine/Maas area via the land glaciers. Despite the fact that large parts of the Staverdense Stream have been changed in the past for the benefit of water mills and other water supplies, the stream valley trail is still relatively intact. Locally, peat can be found.
