Next to the Noorderbos, the first 46 trees of the Birth Forest were planted in 2007. The Birth Forest symbolizes that all children have the right to grow up in a healthy living environment. Parents decide whether to purchase a tree. The names of the newborns from each year are mentioned on plaques in the forest. What is special about the Tilburg Birth Forest is that it is linked to a similar forest in Matagalpa. For every tree planted in Tilburg, one is planted in the sister city in Nicaragua. The National Tree Planting Day Foundation started planting trees for new global citizens in Birth Forests as early as 1990.
