The Regge rises near Diepenheim to flow about 60 kilometers further into the Vecht near Ommen. An area that has become more robust over the past 20 years thanks to the Regge restoration project. We want to further strengthen the area through herb-rich cores. The area around the Regge near Hellendoorn is called 'Midden Regge'.
A natural loop
From 2008 to 2014, a lot of work was done on restoring the Regge to bring the natural course of the river back into the landscape. The purpose of this is to retain and gradually release water during heavy rainfall. The Regge is also allowed to leave the banks (controlled) in certain places. And by its curves, the river now forms the landscape itself; Outer bends become steeper and inner bends slightly sloping.
The richness of plants is also developing. At the Middle Regge we see typical stream valley flora develop; moist, stream-guiding forest with, for example, willow bush and structures of black alder and birch. Butterflies and ostriches, among others, benefit from this. One of the goals is to get moist hay meadows back. These have become rare in Europe due to mining, dewatering and fertilization. Because intensive farming was recently carried out around the Midden Regge, it is still too early for that.
