The client of the Westergasfabriek was the Imperial Continental Gas Association. Apparently, around 1900, the supply of energy was an international affair. Gas from coal was extracted here. That process fell into disuse when gas was discovered in Slochteren in the 1950s.
The path, on which we walk, is named after the architect Isaac Gosschalk, who designed many of the buildings here. Gosschalk worked with all the neostyles of the 19th century. The business premises here could be called neo-Renaissance, with the ornamental stones and the typical Dutch white bacon pieces between the red brick. The same goes for the two Boss houses we pass. The supervisors once lived here, now it is a nursery.
