You can hardly call the Gendt polder an idyllic nature reserve. The area is interesting, because it is being redeveloped by, among others, the Forestry Commission and sand processor K3Delta. Stichting Lingewaard Natuurlijk and IVN are also closely involved in the project. The Zandberg of Rodruza B.V. is the only still operational brick factory in the area. Clay pits and discarded stones are reminders of the industrial past. The excavation covers an area of 36 hectares. Sand and clay that is released is used by the factory and for reinforcement of the dike. There will also be a small harbour to transport stones via the river. The project started in 2019 and will last about eight years.
In return, there will be a new route for walkers and cyclists, so that they no longer have to cross the factory grounds to make a round. Hiking trails will also be expanded and a riparian forest will be created.
In April 2018, 20 red beggars (cattle) and 29 Konik horses were released in the Gendtse Polder nature reserve (eastern part) in Gendt in the Betuwe region. The red geus is a cross between the rare Dutch Brandrode cattle and the French Salers. "Not typically Dutch, but they look like cows and walk a lot in river areas. The grazers have to ensure that the Betuwe area, also part of the Gelderse Poort nature reserve, does not become too rough. Due to the use of the animals, intervention with machines will not be necessary in the coming years. "We can let nature take its course as much as possible. The grazers ensure that the area is maintained in a natural way.
