A tranquil painting by Jan Wijsmuller. Almost idyllic; a small farmhouse, a farmer's wife in blue with a white cap, rippling water and a wide view over meadows. Life in these marshy grounds in this undoubtedly mosquito-rich waterland must have been meager and hard. Nevertheless, with Wijsmuller's work, you can ponder the simplicity of life and the green emptiness of the Green Heart. Not many old farms have been preserved in Nieuwkoop; they have been demolished or remodeled to the point of being unrecognizable. The exact location of this farmhouse is unknown, but it is believed to have been in this area. In the spot where you now stand, there are still a few farms that look original, including one from 1729.
