This road was built in 1934 as a new strategic access road between the Diedenweg and the Lexkesveer. That provoked a lot of protest because of the damage to the landscape, but the road was there anyway. The construction meant a crossing of the Belmonte estate. The part west of the new road became the property of the municipality of Wageningen and was intended for the construction of a new residential area. The site between the new road and the Holleweg was spared as an estate.
Because of its great historical value, two national monuments were designated on the Westberg site west of the Holleweg: in 1967 the archaeological site Oud Wageningen and in 1984 the cemetery of the De Constant Rebecque family. The first protects the archaeological remains of an old cemetery around the original Wageningen parish church. It was probably founded in the eleventh century by the Utrecht bishop Bernoldus. Some wall remains of the old parish church. These were included in the funerary monument during the construction of the family grave De Constant Rebecque. In the past, it was assumed that a settlement of Oud-Wageningen would have been located here. However, this is not very likely from a landscape point of view and is not supported by archaeological research. The historical character of the site is now illustrated by the cultivation of historical agricultural crops.
