The downburst that ravaged the village of Leersum on Friday afternoon, June 18, 2021, blew down 20 hectares around the Graftomb of Nellesteijn and the forest in Breeveen. The storm created in one minute the forest image that had been worked towards for years: with clearings, dead wood, and space for more diverse species of flora and fauna. The owner of the forest plot, Utrechts Landschap, chose to leave the fallen trees as they were to allow nature the chance to recover on its own.
The Storm Path winds 650 meters through the nature reserve. A wooden staircase leads walkers to a boardwalk at a height of 1.5 meters. From above, the 'mikado' of fallen trees and dead branches is clearly visible. During your visit, you will get a unique glimpse of the impact of the storm and the forest's ability to recover.
