De valwind die op vrijdagmiddag 18 juni 2021 over het dorp Leersum raasde, blies ook 20 hectare rondom de Graftombe van Nellesteijn en van het bos in Breeveen omver. Door de storm ontstond in één minuut het bosbeeld waar al jarenlang naartoe werd gewerkt: met open plekken, dood hout en ruimte voor meer verschillende soorten flora en fauna. De eigenaar van het bosperceel, het Utrechts Landschap, koos ervoor het omgewaaide bos te laten liggen om zo de natuur de kans te bieden zelf te herstellen.
Het Stormpad slingert 650 meter door het natuurgebied. Een houten trap leidt wandelaars naar een vlonderpad op 1,5 meter hoogte. Van bovenaf is de ‘mikado’ van omgevallen bomen en dode takken goed zichtbaar. Tijdens je bezoek krijg je een unieke blik op de gevolgen van de storm en het herstellend vermogen van het bos.
