At the beginning of the 12th century, the name Groede is mentioned in a charter of St Peter's Abbey in Ghent, which owned a lot of land in West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The name Groede probably comes from 'grode', a term that in the Middle Ages referred to silted and overgrown land outside the dikes. While the 13th century was marked by massive depoldering, the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century is mainly a period of flooding. The church tower of the current church dates from the 15th century. Between 1583 and 1612 Groede was flooded. Only the church tower was still visible. In 1613 dikes were built and in the same year a new Walloon Church was built. The first church accounts date back to 1615. During the Second World War, Groede was a Red Cross village, with a clearly visible red cross on the church.
