The "father" of Nieuwvliet-Dorp is Jan Adornis. This businessman from Bruges founded the village in 1527. To do this, he had to dike a number of salt marshes, creating the St. Jans Polder. When he came here, you had the Black Hole. That was the middle of the three streams between the Island of Cadzand and the Island of Groede. In essence, Nieuwvliet-Dorp is the bridge between these two former islands.
