French for 'entrenchment'
The earthen walls around Retranchement [Truzement] were built in 1607, during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), to protect the Zwingeul from the Spaniards. The old ramparts have now been conquered by nature.
Windmill of Retranchement
From the ramparts you have a beautiful view of the post mill from 1818. Ever heard of wind law? The very first owner of the mill, Bartolemeus de Vos, had to pay three guilders a year for the use of the wind.
