In 1604, Prince Maurice conquered the island of Cadsant. To defend it, a fortification (in French, Retranchement) was erected to protect the island from the Spaniards. This allowed the Zwin, the waterway to Sluis, to be monitored. The defensive works were named retranchement Cadsandria. After the end of the Twelve Years' Truce in 1621, two forts were built, Fort Oranje in the north and Fort Nassau in the south, which were located 1 km apart. Around 1640, the first residential houses were built, shortly followed by a mill and a Reformed church. During the storm surge of 1682, part of Fort Oranje sank into the Zwin. In 1815, the village gained independence and the name Retranchement was chosen.
