The cozy core Retranchement can boast a rich past. Prince Maurits founded the village in the seventeenth century, which literally means 'entrenchment' or 'stronghold'. The earthen ramparts and the old fort of Nassau had to keep the Spaniards out. Even now, the core is still very much alive. For the chairman of the village council Jurrien Kruidhof, the togetherness of Retranchement is the greatest asset.
