Vegetables did not come from afar in Wijsmuller's time. To the west of the Kostverlorenvaart lay the extensive polder of the municipality of Sloten, which provided the city with vegetables. Barges navigated, among other routes, over the Slotervaart to the city markets. At the Overtoom, there was a so-called 'overhaul' where the boats were 'hauled over' to the higher city. At the Prinsengracht between Reestraat and Berenstraat, there was a vegetable market at that time. It is not certain where he painted this. The exact location cannot be determined, partly because the buildings along the canal have been partially replaced or (significantly) altered. Look at the painting and smell the full baskets of fresh vegetables.
