In the design of Waterdunen (2022), 8 breeding islands were provided.
The coastal birds can breed here in peace because predators such as the fox or brown rat cannot reach the nest . The water does not flood the nests.
The breeding islands are frequently visited in the summer by black-headed gulls, black-headed gulls and sandwich terns, among others. Warblers, linnets and cetti's warblers breed in the thickets in the area.
The breeding islands are mowed every year and further removed by hand from vegetation. After all, the coastal breeding birds like bare ground to breed on.
Everything comes together in Waterdunen: saline tidal nature, recreation, coastal defense and a testing ground for saline crops. This beautiful nature reserve opened in 2022 and is still in full development.
