This statue on the promenade in Breskens was placed in 2009.
It was made by Dirk Van Hecke (1962), who became a sculptor by chance :
He worked in a factory , but because of his passion for art he took drawing and modeling lessons with Walter De Buck, sculptor, singer and many more. At one point Walter needed five minutes of help . Dirk Van Hecke jumped in. In those five minutes , the world of the stone opened up for Van Hecke. Before he realized it, Dirk Van Hecke was cleaving large blocks of stone for the four monumental statues on “The bridge of the imperial delights” in Ghent. He followed various courses at the Sint-Lucas Academy in Ghent. It made him a master of his own unique style. The perfectly coordinated combination of lines and structures turn his works into eye-catching, harmonious contemporary sculptures . Dirk Van Hecke works with different materials.
