To the west of Doorn, in the middle of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, you will find Jachthuis Beukenrode at the end of the ½ km long Beukenlaan.
In 1748 there is a homestead on the estate with the name Het Sand. Owner at that time is Cornelis van Cleef. JDCCW d'Ablaing van Giessenburg, owner of Moersbergen Castle, had the Warandehuis built around 1820 on this estate: a summer house in neo-Gothic style. A landscaped park was created around the house, including a winding pond and a view lane planted with beech trees. In 1860 the Warandehuis was split off from the Moersbergen estate. When Mr. Kees Kneppelhout became the owner, he demolished the old building and had the current house built in 1873, which was to be called Nieuw Sterkenburg. Herman Jan van den Brink designed the building with a watchtower in Neo-Renaissance style with Italian motifs. Kneppelhout had the park redecorated by H. Copijn and also built an orangery, a coach house, a gardener's house and a children's playhouse. When a large part of the estate came into the possession of the Van Kooij family in 1908, it was given the name Beukenrode.
AA Nengerman buys Beukenrode in 1926 from the Kooij family. His widow lives in the house until her death in 1945. Not long after, in 1950, the Brothers of Our Lady of Lourdes van Beukenrode set up a boarding school for boys with adjustment problems. Three pavilions and two outbuildings are being built on the estate for this new purpose. In 1980 the Sint Augustinusstichting took over the management of Beukenrode from the Congregation. In 2002 the boarding school ceases to exist. The coach house with stables and the orangery are now gone. The estate with the national monument is 26 hectares in size.
