The history of the Campveerse Toren starts with its construction in the 15th century. The building is part of the fortifications around Veere.
These works were completed around 1500 as additional reinforcement on the seaward side of a 14th century wall . As one of its towers, this monument has stood the test of time. But certainly not only as a defense.
A function of the tower that runs like a thread through history is that of an inn . From the 16th century you can eat and stay there. The building was first called a city inn, then a lodging house and coffee house and later also a restaurant.
In the past centuries, many dignitaries have climbed the stone steps that provide access to the common room. In previous centuries these were the counts Egmond and d' Hoome (1563), all stadtholders in their capacity as marquis of Veere and VIissingen, the Russian tsar Peter the Great (1717) and William of Orange several times. This prince had his wedding feast here on 21 June 1575 after he had married the French princess Charlotte de Bourbon.
At the beginning of the last century , many artists settled on Walcheren. Inspired by the enchanting light of Zeeland, the picturesque appearance of the town of Veere and the ever-continuous activity of the fishermen, they had plenty to paint. Many of them spent the summer months at the Campveerse Toren, including Henri Cassiers, Anton Pieck, Walter Vaes, Le Fauconnier and Charley Toorop.
Today it is a Romantik hotel with a good restaurant.
