In late 2023, work began south of the village on the expansion of the Heideslag residential area. The Environmental Law mandates that if archeologically valuable information is at risk of being disturbed, prior research must be conducted. This was already evident from previous research, prompting the municipality of Doetinchem to commission ADC ArcheoProjecten for the archaeological investigation. During the excavations, pottery, traces of farm layouts, well traces, and signs of charcoal burners were found in several locations. These charcoal burners can be linked to medieval iron production. The oldest traces/findings date back to the middle of the Bronze Age (around 1500 BC). The environmental law also requires that a report on the research be published within two years. Since that took place in August and September 2023, the report (Doetinchem Wehl Heideslag phase 2) is expected before 2026. Also, check out a publication from the municipality on a Historical visualization of Heideslag.
