Elevation differences on the map indicate the location of a hornwork. A hornwork allows you to better defend the long sides of the dike. A hornwork is a fortification with a specific shape. The curtain connects two half bastions. The long straight flanks often connect to the (fortification) moat. It was part of the encampment of Johann Albrecht (II), Count of Solms, which protected the Dieze from Fort Crèvecoeur to the village of Engelen. At that time, there were 150 ships with, among other things, supplies, bundles of branches, and tent sheets. The large ships could not go beyond a ship bridge located at Engelen. Everything was unloaded there. The ship bridge was protected by Fort Dieze.
