The Donge springs from a stream near Dongen. This is where the river gets its name. The Donge is 7 km long, 30-100 meters wide, and lies at a depth of -3 meters NAP. Until halfway through the 20th century, the river consisted of 2 branches: the Noordergat and the Zuidergat. The section between the start of the Amertak and the center of Geertruidenberg and Raamsdonkveer is called Noordergat. The Zuidergat has been dammed and filled in.
In the first half of the 20th century, the Dongecentrale was located along the Donge. At that time, it was the first and main producer of electricity in North Brabant. The river also played a role in the shoe and leather industry.
