La Donge nasce da un ruscello vicino a Dongen. Qui il fiume deve il suo nome. La Donge è lunga 7 km, larga 30-100 metri e si trova a una profondità di -3 metri sul livello del mare. Fino a metà del 20° secolo il fiume era composto da 2 rami: il Noordergat e lo Zuidergat. La parte tra l'inizio dell'Amertak e il centro di Geertruidenberg e Raamsdonkveer si chiama Noordergat. Lo Zuidergat è stato sbarrato e riempito.
Nella prima metà del 20° secolo lungo la Donge si trovava la Dongecentrale. All'epoca, era il primo e principale produttore di elettricità nel Noord-Brabant. Inoltre, il fiume ha avuto un ruolo nell'industria delle scarpe e della pelle.
