The Peelrand fault is a geological fault line that roughly runs from Roermond via Deurne to Uden. The Earth's surface shifts here in relation to each other. In some places, an actual height difference can be observed. Other notable phenomena are spring water and 'wijst'. Because the geological layers shift in relation to each other, a nearly impermeable layer for water is created. As a result, the groundwater on the higher parts is much higher than on the other side of the fault, meaning the higher areas are thus wetter. Sometimes the water even rises to the surface as a spring, which is called 'kwel'. The groundwater is often rich in iron, giving it a rust-brown color, which is referred to as 'wijst' or 'wijstwater'. This is reflected in the rust-brown ditches in the area.
