At the site of the memorial chapel stood the priory of Hooidonk from the middle of the 12th century. This is one of the first monasteries in North Brabant. In 1146, the abbot of the Limburg Augustinian monastery Rolduc granted permission for the founding of the priory Hooidonk, on a natural island in the Dommel near Nederwetten.
