Geertruidenberg

The fortified town of Geertruidenberg is originally from Holland: it received city rights from the County of Holland in 1213. Real fortifications appeared at the beginning of the Eighty Years' War when William of Orange captured the town. He had new ramparts and three bastions built. In the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, the fortifications increasingly gained more bastions. Fort builder Menno van Coehoorn made this 'Key of Holland' a strategic location in the Southern Waterline to fend off the French. The town came under Louis Napoleon in North Brabant in 1813, with the unification of the United Kingdom.
