The Waalsdorpervlakte is remote. It is quiet here. An ideal place for the
German occupiers during World War II to execute resistance fighters by firing squad -
more than 250 were shot dead here. Two monuments
still commemorate this: a concrete edge with the text '1940-1945' with
four execution crosses behind it. Nearby, on a hill, stands the Bourdon bell that
everyone knows from the Remembrance of the Dead on television. Bourdon means
'grand bell'. It is the largest bell of a carillon.
