Where Haarlem is located, there was once a lot of water. This made it a region where mosquitoes loved to live. One day, a whole swarm descended. But there was something strange going on: their prick-snouts had paintbrushes attached! With those brushes, they created the most colorful artworks. Soon, all of Haarlem knew of the colorful mosquitoes.
A group of annoying flies from a nearby town came to take a look. They were jealous of the beloved art of the Haarlem mosquitoes and wanted to become famous too. In the middle of the night, in pitch darkness, they stole the brushes from the mosquitoes. With those, they intended to make their own art and claim the credit for themselves.
Sofie and Luca, two Haarlem children, loved the art of the mosquitoes. They quickly noticed that something was wrong. The mosquitoes buzzed sadly because they couldn't find their beloved brushes. Sofie and Luca promised to help and began their quest to find the stolen brushes.
They followed the trail to the town of the flies, which looked gray and dull. The flies had used the brushes to paint their surroundings, but their art was bleak and ugly. The flies were disappointed. Still, they did not want to admit that they had done something wrong. With difficulty, Sofie and Luca convinced the flies that art is not about stealing or copying, but about your own ideas. They let them know that they could also be great artists if they used their own talents and didn't try to imitate others.
After a few days, the flies decided to return the stolen brushes and apologize to the mosquitoes. Sofie and Luca returned to Haarlem together with the flies. The mosquitoes were relieved and grateful that their artworks could continue to shine. As a sign of friendship, they painted a huge rainbow on the flies' town to make it a bit cheerier.
From that day on, the flies understood that there was no need to be jealous or steal to be special. They now invented their own art and made their little town cheerful and beautiful. Sofie, Luca, and the mosquitoes were not only happy to have their brushes back, but also that the flies had learned a lesson. Haarlem and the fly town flourished. And the mosquitoes? They were happily flying around again with their brush-snouts.
