Across the small piece of heath and another gate (WATCH OUT< you are immediately on the cycling path!) we cross the Boissevain and arrive at the Blaricummerheide. This heath area of about 59 ha is managed by the Goois Nature Reserve. It is an open heath landscape with a sand excavation in the middle. (More about this in the next point). Grazing by the flock of Drenthe sheep keeps the heath open. They eat grasses, such as the common reed, between the heather and eat the tender, young saplings in the spring before they have a chance to grow. They also like to nibble on the heather bushes themselves, which is good because it stimulates growth.
Heath hosts special biodiversity that can be found in few other places in Europe. Think of the heath blue butterfly and the adder.
