Greek inspiration in the Winkel van Sinkel.
This classical building was built between 1836 and 1839 for Anton Sinkel as the first department store in the Netherlands.
It became known through the rhyme:
'In the Winkel van Sinkel everything is for sale: you can get: baskets of figs. Boxes of pomade. Bottles of orgeat, hats and caps and ladies' corsets: licorice to snack on and pills to poop.'
The building replaced the Barbara and Laurens guest house. The eight cast-iron statues are the most eye-catching. Four women in Greek garments known as Caryatids bear the façade. Above them are Commerce, Caution, Seafaring, and Hope as symbols for a prudent middle-class policy.
