Bird counting post Breskens

Counting post Breskens is known to many birdwatchers as the place where you can experience great migration in spring . The mouth of the Western Scheldt at Breskens is a choice point for birds migrating northwards whether they continue their migration eastwards over land or whether they cross the Western Scheldt and continue their way northwards.

Especially with offshore winds , a strong migration occurs at Breskens, with unprecedentedly high numbers of migratory birds passing by by Dutch standards.

On the dune dike west of Breskens, a migration counting post has been established on the initiative of the regional nature conservation association Het Duumpje . It is a simple, uncovered facility, which offers observers the opportunity to stand in the lee and rest their binoculars or telescope on the cross-shaped screens.

The migration counting post has a lot to offer, especially for experienced observers. Many birds pass by that are considered rare guests in the Netherlands; from the great pipit to the red-rumped swallow and from the sea eagle to the leaf king. Less experienced bird watchers will probably find less to their liking , because some of the birds do not show themselves too close, but can only be recognized with a lot of experience. Nevertheless, it is a special experience for everyone to see tens of thousands of birds migrating by on peak days in spring.

From the counting post you also have an excellent view of the Waterdunen area .
