Hero of the elite and of Domburg
Now he would be a worldwide idol, Dr. Johann Georg Mezger (1838-1909). The Amsterdam butcher's son from humble origins had worked his way up to become one of the first physiotherapists. His 'golden thumbs' enjoyed international fame, and all his movements were reported by the (inter)national press. The star status translated into a personal perfume: 'Eau-de-cologne by Dr. J.G. Mezger'. The miracle doctor loved Domburg but also had criticism.
The star status of Mezger meant a significant boost for foreign traffic to Walcheren. Moreover, he did not hesitate to promote the island. During his stay in Paris, he distributed French-language copies of the Guide through Walcheren, a publication of the Association for Foreign Traffic in Walcheren.
