Writer Frederik Van Eeden founded his idealistic community here, the Walden colony, inspired by a dream of a better society that also resonates in his story The Little Johannes. Van Eeden bought the estate Cruysbergen near Bussum to realize his socialist utopia Walden, a community that stood for a 'true community' against the negative aspects of industrialization and materialism.
Now, Villa Cruysbergen stands here, built in 1919 on the site of the former villa Klein-Cruysbergen.
