At the old Salvius church in Limbricht, of which the oldest parts were built a thousand years ago, Pastor Page wanted to build a sacristy in 1811.
For this, he enlisted architect Jean Bex. His drawings were recently found in Duisburg, but this project was not carried out. After the French period (1817), a sacristy was eventually built, this time designed by Nicolaas Dukers.
In 1953, this was demolished as it was considered a non-authentic element. Nowadays, one would regard the sacristy as an essential part of the architectural history from the French period.
The demolition also revealed the old gate to the priest's choir and the window of the side aisle. What was not known in 1953: twenty-five years later, the oldest vault painting cycle in the Netherlands was discovered underneath twenty layers of lime on the priest's choir. The paintings were created around 1295 by painters from Cologne.
