Café Restaurant The Power Plant

At the height of Havenstraat, we leave the route and turn towards the Old Harbor where the Nautical Quarter of Huizen is located. The long straight road of one kilometer is dull and runs past partly new commercial buildings. Large numbers on a concrete strip on the sidewalk indicate how many meters it is still to walk to the old coastline. Halfway down Havenstraat, the Power Plant emerges on the right side. The building has grown into an icon of Huizen. The plant provided electricity for the floor sail factory Balatum. Many Huizen fishermen worked there after they became unemployed due to the arrival of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, which transformed the Zuiderzee into IJsselmeer. There was also a paper and a varnish factory on the site. Of all the factory buildings from that time, only the power plant remains. Now it is a breeding ground where creativity and hospitality go hand in hand. There is a gym and you can eat there from Monday to Saturday in the trendy café-restaurant with industrial decor.
